An aftermarket accessory for modelers building an American aircraft carrier in 1:700 scale. The package holds a veneer cutout of the flight deck with the laying of the planks printed on it and with a self-adhesive layer. The set is cut for the Trumpeter 05728 kit. That figure is given deliberately, because a veneer deck of the same ship prepared for another kit exists as well and they could not be told apart by the name. The cutouts differ between the versions, so the set has to be chosen according to the kit you are really building.
The USS Essex CV-9 was the first unit of the class of the same name of American fleet aircraft carriers, the most numerous class of large carriers of its time. The ship had a flight deck laid with wood, an island superstructure on the starboard side and extensive galleries of anti-aircraft armament around the perimeter of the deck. It is precisely the wooden deck that forms the largest continuous visible area on the model.
It pays to work systematically. First lay the veneer with the film not taken off onto the deck of the kit and check the position of all the cutouts, especially at the elevators and the base of the superstructure. Only then peel the film off at the bow, anchor the veneer there and work toward the stern. Guide the pressure from the center toward the sides, so that the air can escape. Once it is glued on, let the set settle before you begin further work, and seal the surface with matte varnish. Dust and fine pigments rubbed into the gaps between the planks will deepen the deck to the eye.
This is an accessory to a ship kit, not a model in its own right. The kit, glue, paints and other accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
