The Artwox Model 1:700 wooden deck for the American battleship USS Massachusetts BB-59 replaces the molded plastic deck with a thin veneer with the laying of the planks printed on it. It is an accessory to a kit, not a model.

The set holds a thin sheet of natural veneer, cut to the shape of the deck areas of the matching plastic kit, with the printed pattern of the laying of the planks and with a self-adhesive layer on the back. It is stuck directly onto the plastic deck and replaces its engraved relief with real wood, which under paint and varnish alike looks different from even the best sprayed plastic. This is neither a kit nor a model but an aftermarket accessory to a ship model in 1:700 scale.
The USS Massachusetts BB-59 was an American fast battleship of the South Dakota class, taken into service in 1942. The design joined heavy armor with a power plant that let the ship keep pace with carrier formations. The main armament consisted of 406 mm guns in three turrets, supplemented with extensive anti-aircraft armament that grew further during the war. The ship served first in the Atlantic and then in the Pacific. After retirement she has been preserved as a museum vessel.
The result stands and falls with the preparation of the surface. First rid the plastic deck of burrs and traces of the parting line, sand it lightly and degrease it properly: isopropyl alcohol or warm water with dish soap and thorough drying are enough. Grease from fingers is the most common reason veneer starts to lift at the edges after a few weeks. Try every part dry first and only then remove the backing film, and only in sections. Lay the veneer down without stretching it and work the pressure from the center toward the edges. It is a good idea to fix the surface with a matte or satin varnish, which protects the wood against damp and dirt from further work.
This is an accessory to a plastic kit, not a model. The kit, glue, paints and photo-etched parts are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
