A combined package from Artwox Model for a model of the American battleship USS Missouri BB-63. According to the name it contains a veneer deck with pre-printed plank laying and an adhesive backing, a masking sheet and photo-etched parts. The set is cut for the Academy 14222A kit.
The veneer comes in the natural color of the wood and plenty of modelers leave it that way. If you want to get closer to a particular depiction, the shade can be shifted with wood stain or a tinted varnish. One rule applies, though: wood darkens quickly and irreversibly. Apply it thinned and in coats, let the surface dry between them and judge the shade only on a dry surface, not a wet one. A test on an offcut from the edge of the sheet, which you will be removing anyway, is ideal.
Seal the finished deck with a matte or satin varnish. The veneer is porous and without varnish it picks up dust, fingerprints and any wash, which would gray it irreversibly. Only on a sealed surface can you safely work with pigments and a light wash in the seams. Glue the photo-etched parts from the set on at the very end so that they do not get in the way while you work with the large surface.
This is an accessory for a plastic kit, not a standalone model. The base kit, paints and glue are not included in the package.
