About product

USS New Jersey BB-62 1945 in 1:700 scale from Vee Hobby

A plastic kit of the American battleship USS New Jersey (BB-62) in 1:700 scale, released under the Deluxe Edition name. The particular contents of the package are stated on the box. The year 1945 in the name refers to the ship's configuration from the end of the war in the Pacific, which on battleships is a crucial piece of information, because the armament, the radars and the superstructures changed considerably over a career.

The real subject

USS New Jersey was the second completed unit of the Iowa class, the fastest American battleships. She entered service in May 1943, and her main armament was nine 406 mm guns in three triple turrets, backed by a dual-purpose 127 mm battery and extensive anti-aircraft armament. Her high speed was characteristic, and thanks to it she could operate directly with the fast carrier task forces. During the war she served in the Pacific as a flagship and took part in operations off the Marshall Islands, the Marianas, the Philippines, Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Her career did not end there: she was used in Korea, in Vietnam and, after a modernization, again in the 1980s. Today she is a museum ship.

Building and painting tips

Deal with the hull and the decks separately from the superstructures while the surfaces are still easy to reach. It is practical to paint and unmask the deck before the superstructures go on, because afterwards it is hard to get to. Glue detail parts such as railings, ladders and antennas right at the very end, once you are no longer handling the model. Very thin liquid cement for plastic or cyanoacrylate glue suits the thin parts. Lay the paint on in thin layers so that the engraved detail is not lost; on ships the final weathering tends to be restrained, that is, a light emphasis of the panels, a hint of salt and rust at the anchors and the drain openings. A firm stand or base will protect the model and make the work easier.

Who the model is for

  • collectors of American battleships and models from the Pacific theater
  • modelers with experience of small parts in 1:700 scale
  • anyone interested in the Iowa class in its late wartime configuration

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

To the Iowa class. She was its second completed unit and was among the fastest American battleships, able to operate directly with the fast carrier task forces.

It refers to the ship's configuration from the end of the war in the Pacific. On battleships that is an important piece of information, because the radars, the anti-aircraft armament and the superstructures changed considerably over a career.

Rather not. The 1:700 scale means very small parts and delicate work with glue, so it suits modelers who already have experience of small scales.

The release is marked as a Deluxe Edition. The exact contents of the package are stated on the box, because they differ from one release to another.
