Artwox Model offers this set as an aftermarket accessory for modelers who are building the heavy cruiser USS Quincy CA-39 in 1:700 scale. It is not a kit but a thin wooden veneer cut to the shape of the deck areas of the Trumpeter 05748 kit. On the face it has the laying of the planks printed on it, on the back a self-adhesive layer. Once it is glued on, the flat plastic grid disappears and is replaced by a surface with a pattern of wood of its own, which reacts to light differently from paint.
The USS Quincy CA-39 was a heavy cruiser of the US Navy. Ships of this category built on a combination of strong gun armament in triple turrets, a decent speed and relatively light armor. They served to escort task groups, for gunfire support and for independent tasks. Typical on the model is the long wooden deck broken up by the barbettes of the turrets and by the superstructures, so the veneer has to seat very precisely.
Getting around the superstructures gives the most work. The procedure that proves itself: first check on the plastic part that all the projections and pins are sanded flat, because every little bump will appear in the veneer as a visible bulge. Lay the veneer on dry, mark the position of the barbettes with a pencil and only then take the film off. Around the circular barbettes it helps to lift the veneer and turn it rather than to press it in by force. Cut the overhangs away with a new blade guided along the edge of the plastic. Painting is not necessary, but a darker wash drawn along the planks brings out the gaps and adds depth. Matte varnish at the end evens the sheen out.
This is an accessory to a plastic kit, not a model of the ship. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
