About product

USS South Dakota BB-57 1:700 (Trumpeter)

Injection-molded plastic model of the American battleship USS South Dakota (BB-57) in 1:700 scale from Trumpeter. It is a new mold; depending on the parts enclosed, the hull can be built either as a full hull with a stand or as a waterline version. The box contains plastic sprues, a clear part for the shipboard aircraft and decal sheets. The instructions in the box state the exact parts count and marking schemes.

The real subject

South Dakota was the lead ship of the fast battleship class of the same name in the US Navy, commissioned in 1942. As a designated flagship she had a bulkier command superstructure and a slightly different arrangement of anti-aircraft armament from her sister ships. She carried a main caliber of 406 mm in three gun turrets and extensive anti-aircraft armament. She became famous for the night action off Guadalcanal in November 1942 and went on to serve as an escort for the aircraft carriers in the Pacific.

Building and painting tips

Decide in advance between the full hull and the waterline version - a waterline model looks good on a water base, a full hull on the stand supplied. Glue the small parts of the superstructures with liquid modeling cement for plastic. Adding photo-etched railings and antennas will raise the realism (they are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise). Lay down a primer before painting, spray the camouflage scheme with an airbrush in thin coats and pick out the decks and the recesses with dark washes.

Who the model is for

  • Modelers interested in American battleships of the Second World War
  • Collectors of warships in 1:700 scale
  • Builders who will appreciate the choice of full hull or waterline
  • Anyone interested in the flagship of the South Dakota class

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
