The Lancia 3Ro was a heavy truck built from the end of the 1930s and was among the most capable machines of its kind in Italian production of that time. It was powered by a diesel engine and the vehicle was built for heavy work in difficult terrain, which showed in the massive frame and the tall cab. It was used for carrying cargo and troops, as an artillery tractor and also as a chassis for various bodies, among others for the self-propelled guise with an anti-aircraft gun of 90 mm caliber. It was deployed in North Africa and on other fronts, and its characteristic silhouette is among the typical motifs of Italian hardware of that time. The version with a tarpaulin over the bed was the most common guise of the transport vehicle.
In 1:72 scale the parts are small, so it is advisable to use thin cement for plastic applied with a brush and to cut the parts off with a sharp scalpel, not with cutters. First finish the frame with the drive train and the axles, and only then fit the cab and the bed. A base coat that evens the surface out and reveals imperfect seams comes in handy before painting. For Italian hardware of the North African deployment, sand and ocher tones are typically used, while European deployments tend to be in darker earth shades — check the particular shade against the documentation for the machine you are building. A tarpaulin calls for a different approach from sheet metal: a matte surface, fine accenting of the folds with a lighter tone and fine dust weathering. The chassis and the wheels are brought to life by a wash and by pigments for mud and dust effects.
