About product

WGr.21 for the Bf-109G 1:72 - a 3D-printed resin set

The set contains the WGr.21 underwing armament for the Messerschmitt Bf-109G in 1:72 scale. It is an accessory that turns the model of an ordinary Gustav into a machine armed against bomber formations. The parts are made by 3D printing in resin, so they have thin walls and cleanly open tube mouths, which matters on such a small shape in 1:72.

Why this particular accessory

The improvement is visible at first glance and calls for no surgery on the structure of the model. At the same time it opens up interesting camouflage schemes of the units committed against the daylight raids.

The real subject

The WGr.21 designation belonged to a rocket projectile of 21 centimeter caliber, taken over from a ground rocket launcher and hung under the wings of fighters. The Luftwaffe used it in 1943 against the close formations of American bombers, where the point was not an accurate hit but breaking the formation apart: an explosion inside the group was meant to scatter the bombers so that they would lose their mutual defensive fire. The tubes worsened the flying qualities, which is why they were jettisoned after firing. Alongside the Fw 190, the Bf 109G was the main carrier of this armament.

Building and painting tips

Wash the resin before painting and let it dry. Separate the tubes from the carrier structure with a saw, level the mating face and glue the mounting with super glue, ideally only after the underside of the wing has been sprayed. The tube is usually in a shade close to the underside of the wing or in gray; darken the inside of the mouth and add traces of scorching. Watch the symmetry of the two sides while positioning them, as a small deviation is immediately visible in this scale.

Who the set is for

  • builders of the Bf 109G in 1:72 scale
  • anyone interested in the Defense of the Reich and the fight against the bombers
  • modelers who want an unusual variant of a well-known type
  • more advanced builders used to small resin parts

An accessory for a plastic kit. Eduard lists this set for the Bf 109G, so check that it matches your model against the manufacturer's information.

FAQ

It was a rocket projectile of 21 centimeter caliber hung under the wings. The Luftwaffe used it against close bomber formations, the aim being to break the formation apart.

As a rule no, the mounting is glued to the underside. It is best to fit it only after the underside of the wing has been sprayed, and to watch the symmetry of the two sides.

Eduard lists this set for the Bf 109G. The mounting was type-specific, so transferring it to other aircraft without checking against documentation is not advisable.

Most often in a shade close to the underside of the wing or in gray. Darken the inside of the mouth and add fine traces of scorching, but keep it restrained overall.
