About product

A photo-etched set for the A-36 Apache in 1:72 scale

An aftermarket accessory from the Czech company Brengun. On a sheet of thin photochemically etched metal are parts cut for one particular Brengun kit. The set is not a model or a kit in itself; it serves to complete a model you already own. The aim is to raise the level of detail where injection molding in plastic runs into its limits.

Why photo-etched parts instead of plastic

Etched sheet has a thickness in tenths of a millimeter, whereas a plastic part has to be markedly thicker for the sake of strength and of the way the material flows in the mold. In 1:72 scale that difference shows at first glance: an instrument panel, seat belts, grilles, bulkheads or frames come out of photo-etched metal thin and sharp, while their plastic counterparts look soft and rounded. Pressings and micro-relief that cannot be engraved into a mold can also be made in photo-etched metal.

How to work with photo-etched parts

Separate the parts with a scalpel on a hard surface; never break them out, or they will bend. Make the bends in a bending tool or between two blades, and a light score from the inside helps create a sharp edge. A stiffer piece can be softened by brief, careful warming over a flame; once it has cooled the material is more pliable. Degrease the metal before painting and apply a primer, otherwise the paint will not hold. It is bonded with super glue applied in a microscopic amount, ideally with a pin or a wire, because ordinary cement for plastic does not work on metal.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers building this type in 1:72 scale who want a well-drawn interior and exterior detail
  • More experienced builders with experience of working with a scalpel and tweezers
  • Competitors, where the sharpness of small parts is judged
  • Those who want to display the cockpit open

The accessory is supplied on its own and unpainted. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. It is a photo-etched set, that is a set of metal details for a model you buy separately.

Super glue on a cyanoacrylate base, applied in a really small amount. Ordinary cement for polystyrene will not bond metal.

Yes, the metal should be degreased and sprayed with a primer. Without a base coat the paint holds poorly on smooth photo-etched metal and rubs off during handling.

Working with photo-etched parts calls for tweezers, a sharp scalpel and patience. It is not the ideal choice for a first model, but it is after a few kits.
