A small scale, a big difference in a scene
In 1:72 scale a whole scene fits into a display case, not just one machine. In this scale, weapon and infantry sets are a straightforward way to fill a scene out and give it meaning.
The 81 mm mortar was carried in the US Army as the 81 mm Mortar M1. It was the standard medium mortar allotted at battalion level, muzzle-loaded and with a smooth bore. It consisted of three main parts that could be separated and carried: the barrel, the bipod with the elevating and traversing gear, and the baseplate. It is precisely this ability to be broken down that is useful for a modeler, because it makes it possible to show the weapon being carried as well as in a firing position.
The parts in this scale are small, so cut them from the sprue with a sharp knife or plastic nippers and clean the stubs up with a file rather than twisting them off. Bond with thin cement for plastic applied with a fine brush, so that you do not flood the delicate edges.
Start the painting with a primer and a base olive tone according to the scheme chosen. In 1:72 what is called scale lightening works, that is a somewhat lighter base, because otherwise a model comes across as dark. Pick the details out with a dark wash that flows into the recesses, and at the end add dust pigments at the baseplate, where dust would realistically gather most.
The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Paints, glue and a base are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
