Landing gear bay masks for a model of the British BAC Lightning F.1, F.3 and F.6 fighter in 1:72 scale, cut for the Airfix kits.
Responsibility details are not available.
The BAC Lightning was a British Cold War fighter built around a single task: to get as high as possible as quickly as possible. It had its two jet engines housed in the fuselage one above the other, a sharply swept wing and a rate of climb that made it a legend. The F.1, F.3 and F.6 versions differed in equipment, armament and, on the later machines, in a large ventral tank as well.
The set covers the openings of the landing gear bays so that no paint drift gets into them while the fuselage and the wing are sprayed. The need to stuff the bays with paper or modeling putty, which never holds accurately at the edge of an opening, falls away. The cut matches the shapes of the bays on the Airfix kits in 1:72 scale.
Spray the bays and let them dry before you apply the masks; the masks belong on the model before the outer surfaces are sprayed. Degrease the surface around an opening, seat the mask and press the edges down with a blunt toothpick. Spray thinly, so that paint is not heaped up under an edge. After spraying, take the mask off pulling it back over itself, while the finish has not hardened completely. If a kit fits differently from what the set expects, lay the mask on dry before applying it and even out any overhang with a sharp blade.
For modelers who build British jet aircraft in 1:72 scale and want the landing gear bays clean with no lengthy masking. The kit, paints and glue are not part of the package, unless stated otherwise.
