A sheet of decals in 1:72 scale from the British brand Xtradecal, devoted to the two-seat training versions of the Lightning fighter. It is the first part of a two-part line, and the second part completes it with further markings. It is neither a kit nor a plastic accessory, but a printed sheet that is laid onto a finished painted model. Which machines and units the sheet covers is given on the packaging and in the instructions supplied.
The Lightning was a British supersonic fighter with a pair of turbojets arranged unusually one above the other in the fuselage. The T.4 and T.5 training versions had a widened forward fuselage with two seats side by side and were derived from the single-seat variants of their generation. Besides training they also served to keep qualifications current and to check pilots out. Because of the wider fuselage and the different canopy, the trainers differ clearly from the single-seat versions and also have a marking system of their own.
Do not underestimate the soaking time. Dip the decal in clean lukewarm water for only a few seconds and then let it rest on a paper towel until the film starts to shift freely on the backing. An over-soaked decal loses its adhesive, does not hold on the model and tears while being moved. Change the water as soon as it clouds with released adhesive, because remains of adhesive on the surface dull the varnish once dry and are visible. Use a damp flat brush for the transfer and not tweezers, which easily tear the thin film.
The package contains the decal sheet only. The kit, paints and varnishes are not part of it.
