A set of figures of British infantry in 1:72 scale from the manufacturer Strelets-R, placed in time in the years 1899 to 1902. The castings are of soft plastic, unpainted and unassembled. The set is building material for a scene or a diorama, not a finished decoration. The number of pieces, the division of the poses and any supplementary arms are stated on the packaging.
At the turn of the century the British infantry went over from conspicuous colored uniforms to practical khaki, which blended better with the parched South African landscape. A typical element of the period is the tropical helmet and canvas equipment, with field units often supplemented with uneven items according to what was available. The fighting took place in open terrain at long ranges, so the close formations loosened and the infantry moved in dispersed skirmish lines. It is precisely this character that is rewarding for the composition of a scene, because the figures do not have to stand in a regular row.
First remove the parting seams with a scalpel, then wash the figures and let them dry out properly. Apply a thin primer onto the soft plastic, otherwise the paint chips off during handling. Khaki uniforms are rewarding to shade: lighten the base tone slightly on the tops of the shoulders and the thighs and put a brown wash into the folds. Set the leather straps and the bandoliers apart with a richer brown, and the tropical helmet on the contrary with a noticeably lighter off-white. Finally add dry dust to the footwear and the calves with a fine pigment. If you glue the figures to a base, use cyanoacrylate, as ordinary modeling cement for plastic will not join this material.
The figures are supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
