About product

Chinese light cavalry of the 16th to 17th century, 1:72 (Red Box)

A set of figures in 1:72 scale from the maker Red Box. This is a mounted theme, which places the set elsewhere in a scene than infantry: a rider takes up a considerably larger footprint and the scene around him needs free space. The set belongs to a trio that the maker divides by degree of protection, and light cavalry is the most mobile element of it.

The real subject

Light mounted detachments in the territory of China in the period of the 16th to the 17th century. Light cavalry differed from the heavier kind mainly by a lesser degree of protection of the rider as well as of the horse, which gave it greater reach and speed. The armament was adapted to fighting from horseback, that is shorter and lighter.

Scale, assembly and the space around cavalry

Mounted figures in 1:72 are usually made up of a rider and a horse separately, so the first concern is the gap in the saddle. Check the seating dry, sand any overhang down carefully and glue the joint only once the position of the legs is straight; a rider seated crooked is the first thing a viewer notices from behind. Paint them separately: finish the horse before you seat the rider permanently, otherwise you will not reach the areas under the saddle and the chest. For laying a scene out the opposite applies to what holds for infantry. Cavalry does not bear crowding; it needs a free area around it for the movement to come across readably, and the spacing between horses should be distinctly greater than the gap between foot figures. A smaller number of riders set out with space therefore comes across as more dynamic than a dense group.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of dioramas who want a mobile element in a scene
  • Collectors of historical figures in 1:72 with a focus on Asia
  • Modelers who want to complete the trio of light, medium and heavy cavalry
  • Wargamers playing early modern Asian conflicts

The figures are supplied unpainted. Paints, glue and a base are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The division follows from the degree of protection of the rider as well as of the horse; light cavalry is the least protected and the most mobile. The particular contents of the individual packages are stated by the maker.

Try the seating dry, sand the overhang down carefully and glue only once the position of the legs is straight. Finish the horse in paint before you seat the rider permanently.

With greater spacing than infantry. Cavalry needs a free area for the movement to stand out; a dense group comes across as static.

The number of figures and the number of poses are stated by the maker for the particular set.
