The first sheet of a decal series in 1:72 scale devoted to the reconnaissance and observation biplane Curtiss SOC Seagull. These are wet decals, that is a classic sheet released in water. The package holds the sheet and instructions for the schemes; a model and paints are not part of it. The series is divided into parts with different selections of markings.
The SOC Seagull was a two-seat biplane with a radial engine, intended for reconnaissance and observation on behalf of larger surface ships. Characteristic of it is the interchangeable alighting gear — the machine could be built on a central float with stabilizing floats under the wings for a catapult launch and a landing on water, or on a conventional wheeled undercarriage for operation from land. It is exactly this dual form that is attractive to a modeler, because one type yields two models of completely different character. The type stayed in service even after more modern machines were meant to replace it.
With the float version, think out a stand or a base in advance, as a model on a float is otherwise hard both to build and to display. Glue the joints of the float struts by a dry-tested procedure: first set everything together without glue, check that the model stands straight and only then fix it. Apply the decals to the upper wing and to the floats before you assemble the whole arrangement — once glued, these surfaces are harder to reach. The base has to be glossy, otherwise silvering will appear under the decal. Apply the softener only onto the surface of the decal and let it work undisturbed, especially on surfaces with the ribs of the fabric covering emphasized. Add the bracing wires and rigging right at the end, after matting.
The package holds only the decals. The model, paints and glue are not part of it.
