An injection-molded plastic kit of the British four-engine de Havilland DH.91 Albatross transport and mail aircraft in 1:72 scale. Valom is a Czech maker that has long concentrated on less usual types and works with short-run technology, so the parts call for somewhat more careful preparation than those of a mass-produced kit. The Albatross appears in plastic only rarely, so this is a welcome addition to a collection of interwar transport aircraft.
The DH.91 Albatross came about in the second half of the 1930s as a fast all-wood aircraft with an aerodynamically clean monocoque fuselage. It was powered by four air-cooled inverted V12 de Havilland Gipsy Twelve engines in slim nacelles, which gave the aircraft its characteristic slender silhouette. The first two examples built were intended for long-distance mail flights, and the others served in passenger transport on European routes. Only seven examples were built in all, and during the Second World War the remaining aircraft were used for transport duties; none has survived.
With a short-run mold it pays to assemble all the parts dry first and to refine the mating surfaces with a file and fine abrasive paper. Glue with thin cement for polystyrene, which flows into the joint by capillary action. Join the long fuselage and fill it before you start gluing the engine nacelles, and mask the cockpit glazing before spraying. Apply a filler primer before painting, which reveals any unevenness; the smooth painted surfaces of interwar transport aircraft come out best with an airbrush and a gloss varnish, onto which the decals then lie well.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
