The real subject

The Douglas TBD-1 Devastator was an American carrier-based torpedo bomber of the US Navy and one of the first all-metal carrier monoplanes with folding wings. It was a modern machine when it was introduced, but by the start of the Second World War it was already becoming obsolete. It suffered heavy losses in the early Pacific battles and was soon replaced by newer types. It carried the American naval markings of the period.
