The template carries a grid of holes or engraving marks of the given type; you follow them to make punches or to press rivets into thin foil or plastic. The lentil shape of the heads corresponds to more modern equipment. Making rivets by hand gives full control over the spacing, so you can restore structures lost to sanding, add missing rows or create an entirely new surface.
