The set belongs to the range of decals that imitate wood and plywood. It is therefore not a resin or plastic part but waterslide decals with which the propeller of an already built model is covered. Painting a laminated propeller by hand is one of the hardest disciplines in finishing First World War aircraft, and a decal imitation makes it far simpler. Dimensionally it is based on the Eduard kit.
The Fokker D.VII was a German fighter biplane committed to action at the end of the First World War, prized for its steady behavior at a high angle of attack and its willing climb. The propellers of aircraft of that period were glued up from several layers of different woods and, once polished and varnished, had an unmistakable pattern: light and dark laminations converged toward the tip of the blade and formed a regular figure on the hub. The shade and the number of layers differed according to the propeller maker, which is why period photographs differ noticeably from one another.
First spray the propeller with a light base: the smoother and more even the surface, the better the pattern comes out. Then comes the gloss varnish over which the decal is applied. Soak the motif briefly in lukewarm water, slide it onto the part and adjust its position while it can still be moved. On the curved blades a decal softener helps, or warm the decal slightly and press it down with a damp brush so that it settles into the curve. Once it is dry, overcoat it and the edges of the film will disappear, and finish the surface with a semi-matte varnish: a period propeller was glossy but not mirror-like.
The package contains only the decals. The model, the paints and the varnishes are not part of it.
