About product

1:72 Fokker D.XXI Dutch and Finnish early canopy airbrush mask - a masking set from MH models

A masking set from MH models for models of the Fokker D.XXI fighter in 1:72 scale, specifically for the Dutch machines and the early Finnish series. The masks are stuck onto the clear part of the cockpit, which is sprayed over with the color of the frames, and the masks are taken off. The frames thus get the same width along their whole length and the paint does not run onto the glazing. It is an accessory to a kit, not the model itself.

The real subject

The Fokker D.XXI was a Dutch single-seat high-wing fighter of the 1930s with a fixed, faired landing gear and mixed construction. It was designed with undemanding production and operation from simple airfields in mind. The Dutch machines and the early series built in Finland carried a radial engine and differed from the later Finnish machines in the shape of the nose and in details of the cockpit canopy. It is exactly the shape of the glazing that is the reason why the manufacturer divides the masks into an early and a later form.

Use and masking tips

Before sticking anything on, check that the shape of the piece matches the clear part of your kit - on the early form the canopy is divided differently from the later Finnish machines. Lift the pieces out of the sheet one at a time with the tip of a scalpel, offer them up to the glazing and press them into the engraved edges of the frame all round. Cover the inside of the cockpit with a damp tissue and the surrounding areas with tape. Spray the shade of the interior of the frames and the external finish once that is dry, both in thin coats. Take the mask off with tweezers soon after the paint has dried, pulling at a slight angle rather than straight up.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of fighters of the late 1930s in 1:72
  • Modelers building Dutch or early Finnish machines of the D.XXI type
  • Those who want sharp cockpit frames without outlining by brush
  • Airbrush users

This is not a model of the aircraft and not a kit. Paints, varnish and the base model are not included in the package.

FAQ

No. It is a masking set for the cockpit glazing. A Fokker D.XXI model in 1:72 is bought separately.

The early and later forms differ in the division of the cockpit canopy, which is why the manufacturer offers two different sets. Check which version you are building before you buy.

The edges of the piece have to lie exactly in the engraved lines of the clear part. If they overhang or fall short, it is most likely a different form of canopy.

The shade of the interior of the frames first, and once that is dry the color of the external finish. Apply both coats thinly, so that no step appears on the edge of the mask.
