An injection-molded plastic kit of the German three-ton truck with a wood gas generator in 1:72 scale from the Czech maker MAC Distribution. The real subject is an Opel Blitz converted to a substitute fuel. The model is supplied as a set of parts to be glued and painted. It is a short-run kit with fine detail, and patient cleaning up and fitting of the parts pays off.
The Opel Blitz was the standard German three-ton truck, produced in large numbers and in many configurations during the Second World War. Toward the end of the war the supply of fuel faltered, and so a number of vehicles in the rear received a wood gas generator, a tall cylindrical gasifier in which flammable gas for the engine was released from blocks of wood. The conversion cut the power and the range but allowed the vehicle to run even in an acute shortage of gasoline. Vehicles with a generator were usually fielded away from combat units.
Assemble the chassis, the axles and the frame first; finish the cab and the interior before you close the bodywork up. The gasifier generator is a striking feature, so clean it up and seat it so that it stands vertical. Paint over a primer in German dark yellow (Dunkelgelb) or gray, according to the period. Draw out the panel lines with a dark wash and weather the underside and the wheels with pigments (mud, dust); bring the area around the generator to life with traces of soot and rust.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
