About product

German tall boots 1:72

A small accessory for figures in 1:72 scale, not a figure on its own and not a kit of a model. The set captures German tall leather boots, that is footwear with a smooth tall shaft reaching below the knee. It is used for exchanging the footwear on figures that the manufacturer supplies in laced shoes or in gaiters.

The real subject

The tall leather boot was for a long time the standard footwear of the German infantry. Characteristic of it is the smooth shaft with no lacing, which gives the leg a flowing silhouette and is recognizable even from a distance in a small scale. During the Second World War an ankle-high laced shoe worn with gaiters gradually supplemented and replaced it for reasons of production, so the choice of footwear on a figure is one of the clues for placing a scene in time. If you are building a particular period, it pays off to watch this detail.

Fitting, cleaning up and painting

Cut the original footwear off with a scalpel or a fine saw at the place where the new part follows on, and level the mating surface with a file. Try the part dry and check that the figure stands straight once glued on and that both feet rest on the surface. It is glued with super glue; even the transition between the trouser leg and the shaft out with a thin layer of two-part filler, in which a fold of the trousers pulled over the boot can also be suggested. Spray the whole with a base coat before painting. Build leather up from a darker base layer, draw a dark wash into the bend above the ankle and go lightly over the toe and the edges of the sole with a dry brush. Finally, a thin layer of dust on the lower part of the shaft helps, so that the footwear does not come across as new.

Who the set is for

  • builders of dioramas with infantry figures in 1:72 scale
  • modelers who convert figures and watch the period correctness of the footwear
  • anyone interested in combining different types of footwear in one scene
  • more experienced modelers working with very small parts

The accessory is supplied unpainted. Glue, paints and the figure itself are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It has a smooth tall shaft with no lacing reaching below the knee, whereas an ankle-high shoe is low and was worn with gaiters. The silhouette of the leg therefore looks quite different.

It is one of the clues. The tall boot was the standard for a long time, and during the Second World War an ankle-high laced shoe with gaiters gradually supplemented it for reasons of production.

It is not. It is an accessory intended for modifying an already purchased figure in 1:72 scale.
