About product

A 2 m antenna rod for the Fu 5, 1:72 scale (MASTER)

In a small scale the antenna is the most sensitive detail of the whole model. A plastic part in 1:72 tends to be either far too thick, or it twists as it is taken off the sprue, or both. This turned metal rod corresponds to the two-meter antenna of the Fu 5 radio set of German Second World War equipment, and in 1:72 scale it works out at just under three centimeters. According to the name the package holds one piece.

What makes a metal rod different

A turned part has a constant cross section along its whole length and a smooth tip, so even in a photograph of the model it reads as wire rather than as a stick. It stays straight, which with plastic in this scale can hardly be guaranteed, and above all it survives ordinary handling. On a finished 1:72 model the antenna is typically the first part you brush against while carrying it, and a metal rod merely bends aside instead of snapping off.

Fitting and painting tips

Cut the plastic stub off with a sharp scalpel and level the surface. Given the size of the part it pays to drill a hole with a micro drill bit in a hand drill and glue the rod into it; simply gluing it onto a surface will not hold in this scale. Use cyanoacrylate glue in the smallest possible amount and wipe any excess away at once, because whitening around the foot is conspicuous in a small scale. Fit the antenna at the very end of the build, after painting and weathering. Degrease the metal and go over it with a metal primer or blacken it with a bluing solution. If you transport the model, consider a transport box with its own cradle for the model so that the antenna does not lean against the lid.

Who the part is for

  • Builders of German Second World War equipment in 1:72 scale
  • Modelers who finish a small scale down to the detail
  • Those who want an antenna that survives handling and a display case
  • Builders used to working with a micro drill bit and cyanoacrylate glue

This is an accessory to a plastic model, not a kit. Paints and glue are not included in the package.

FAQ

Because in this scale a plastic part is necessarily thicker than it should be and warps easily. A metal rod holds a straight shape and reads as real wire.

It is more reliable to drill a hole with a micro drill bit and glue the rod into it. A glued joint on a flat surface is very fragile in a small scale.

After painting and weathering, as the very last step of the build. Otherwise it gets in the way of every further operation.

No. The rod is turned for 1:72; the manufacturer lists the corresponding part for 1:35 separately.
