A resin set of wheels for a model of the American Grumman F-14 carrier fighter in the D version, in 1:72 scale. The tires are cast with the flattening at the point of contact with the ground, so the finished model stands on its landing gear under its own weight. The manufacturer separates the sets for the earlier A and B versions from the one for this last version, so check before ordering which form of the machine your kit represents.
The F-14D was the final and most capable form of the Tomcat carrier fighter. It combined the more powerful powerplant of the B version with digital avionics and a modernized cockpit, so the crew could handle tasks the original machine of the 1970s had never been designed for. In the later part of its service the Tomcat also found work as a carrier of precision weapons against ground targets, which earned it a nickname among crews referring to that bombing role. It disappeared from the decks of the US Navy in 2006 and aircraft of a different design replaced it.
Wash the castings with warm soapy water and cut the casting blocks off with a saw. Resin is glued with cyanoacrylate glue; the kind for plastic will not hold on it. Separate the rim from the tire by masking, best of all with a circular template. Late machines carried a matte gray scheme on which wear shows up well, so a dark glaze in the tread and fine brake dust on the rim are worth the effort. Once the wheel is fitted, the flattened patch has to lie parallel with the ground.
