A photo-etched set for the Avenger in 1:72 scale

A set of photo-etched parts for a model of the Grumman TBM-3 Avenger carrier bomber in 1:72 scale. Thin metal sheet makes it possible to produce elements that on a small plastic part are either too thick or missing altogether. This is not a kit, but an accessory to one.

The real subject

The Avenger was a carrier torpedo bomber of the US Navy from the Second World War, a massive single-engine machine with an internal bomb bay, folding wings and a dorsal gun turret. The TBM designation was carried by aircraft from license production; in design terms it is the same type. The tall cabin and the richly detailed interior make it a model on which extra work really does show.

Working with photo-etch

• Separate the part from the sheet with a sharp blade on a hard surface, not with nippers, which buckle the metal.
• Make the bends in a bending tool or between two blades, always along the marked groove.
• Glue with cyanoacrylate applied with the tip of a wire, or solder; ordinary glue for plastic has no effect on metal.
• Degrease the metal before painting and go over it with a primer, otherwise the finish will hold badly.
• Cut the plastic original off first and sand the surface so that the photo-etched part seats.

For builders who want to add fine metal detail to a model and do not mind working with tweezers. Which elements the sheet carries and which kit it is cut for is given in the instructions for the set, so lay the parts on dry before gluing. The package contains only the photo-etched parts. The model, paints and glue are not included, unless stated otherwise.
