An injection-molded plastic kit of the four-engine transport aircraft in 1:72 scale from Zvezda. At this scale it is a large model with a span of around half a meter, which needs the right amount of room in a display case and a firm base. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted.
The C-130J-30 is the stretched version of the upgraded Super Hercules range. Compared with the basic J version its fuselage is roughly four and a half meters longer thanks to two inserted sections ahead of and behind the wing, so it takes a considerably longer load. It is powered by four turboprop engines with six-blade composite propellers, which are the most conspicuous outward difference from the older versions with four-blade propellers. The cockpit is fitted with digital displays and the aircraft can be operated by a crew of two, whereas older versions needed more people. The design has stayed true to the original concept from the 1950s: a high wing, non-retracting main landing gear housed in side fairings and a rear cargo ramp that allows vehicles to be loaded straight from the ground.
With a large model it pays to plan the order of work in advance. Finish and paint the cockpit and the cargo hold before you close the fuselage. Glue the long lengthwise fuselage joints in sections and hold them with tape so no step appears anywhere, then sand the excess down and rescribe the panel lines. Before the decals, even the surface out with gloss varnish and once they are dry switch to matte. Mask the clear cockpit parts, as a frame showing through would otherwise give the paint away. Paint the propellers separately and fit them at the very end.
