HMS Victorious was a British aircraft carrier that served from the Second World War and went through an extensive rebuild in the 1950s. The motif of the base captures the landing runway of the flight deck as it was in 1964, that is the surface the machines touched down and taxied on. A carrier aircraft stood on a plate with this drawing tells at once where it flew from, without your having to build a whole diorama.
A plate of acrylic 3 mm thick, measuring 280 x 180 mm and weighing 170 g, with a colored print. The drawing is prepared in 1:72 scale; the surface of the plate corresponds to roughly twenty by thirteen meters of real deck, so the model stands on a section of it and free space is left around it. The 3 mm thickness gives the plate rigidity, so it does not bend under the model and can be carried with it.
The base is not assembled or painted over. You simply stand a finished model on it, or fix it with double-sided tape so that it does not shift when carried. Acrylic is hard but sensitive to scratches: clean it with a soft dry cloth, never with a paper towel, and do not go at it with solvents or spirits, which will cloud the surface for good. When photographing, place the model off center rather than in the middle and leave a stretch of free surface in front of it, as the shot then does not look cramped.
