A plastic kit of the tracked Type 99 self-propelled howitzer of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force in 1:72 scale from the Japanese manufacturer Fujimi. It is a special release which, according to the name of the package, is completed with a figure. It is a kit to be glued and painted.
The Type 99 is a Japanese tracked self-propelled howitzer of 155 mm caliber. It is built on a tracked chassis with a traversing armored turret in which both the gun and the crew are housed, so the gun is worked under the protection of armor. The concept matches contemporary self-propelled howitzers: take up a firing position quickly, fire and move out before the enemy can answer. The Type 99 replaced the older Japanese self-propelled howitzer of the previous generation and serves as the main artillery weapon of the ground component of the Self-Defense Forces.
On a self-propelled howitzer the running gear is the most demanding part. Assemble, paint and weather the road wheels, the idler wheels and the tracks before you set about the turret and the superstructures, as you will only reach them with difficulty later. The long barrel is delicate, so glue it at the end of the build and watch that it sits on the axis. Apply a primer before painting and mask the glazing and the vision ports. Spray the base shade with an airbrush in thin coats; a wash into the engraved lines will bring the panels out and dust pigments on the tracks and the lower hull will give the model scale depth. Paint the figure separately, away from the model.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
