An international 1:72 sheet for the Hercules transport aircraft. Five machines from five countries, among them a firefighting aircraft from Colorado and a Swedish machine in its domestic designation.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Lockheed C-130 Hercules transport aircraft has been in service since the 1950s and stays on the books of air forces longer than most of the machines meant to replace it. This sheet makes use of that and sets five aircraft from four continents side by side, to show in one place how differently the same airframe looks under different national insignia.
The range of uses is wide even within one air force. The same airframe carries cargo, fights forest fires, refuels in flight and drops paratroops, and according to the task not only the equipment inside the fuselage changes but also the lettering and the markings outside. For a modeler that means one kit can carry a great many different results.
The most interesting option is machine 94-7318 of a Colorado Air National Guard unit, Peterson base, in 2017. It flew with a built-in firefighting system, that is with tanks and pipework that slide into the cargo compartment on rails and are taken out again once the fire season is over. In a few hours the aircraft is thus turned from a transport into a firefighter.
The Japanese machine 45-1074 of a flight operated from Nagoya Komaki airfield is dated January 2020. The Pakistani C-130E with the number 4144 served with No. 6 Squadron at the Chaklala base in January 2013, and the Saudi C-130H with the number 473 with No. 4 Squadron at Jeddah in 2016. The fifth is the Swedish aircraft 844 of a unit based at Såtenäs, listed under the domestic designation TP-84.
The sheet mixes two versions. The older E and the newer H are told apart mainly by the propellers and by details on the leading edge, so it is good to check in advance which version the kit captures. The decals are supplied on their own; neither the plastic nor the paint belongs with them.
