New Ware 1:72 mask set — Avro Shackleton AEW.2

A set of self-adhesive, precisely cut masks for the model of the Avro Shackleton in the AEW.2 form in 1:72 scale. It is not a kit: these are masks that are applied before spraying to the glazing and to the other areas that are to stay free of paint, and removed once the spraying is done.

A large airplane means plenty of glass

In 1:72 the Shackleton is one of the sizeable models, and its glazing is not just a single cockpit canopy — there is the glazed nose, the side windows and further clear parts. Cutting that many masks from tape by hand is work for a whole evening and the result tends to be inconsistent: every window has a frame of slightly different thickness. A pre-cut set removes this problem, because all the masks come from one pattern and match the parts in size.

A procedure that works

• First glue the glazing into the fuselage, fill and sand the joints; only then mask, or you will damage the mask with the sandpaper.
• Apply the masks from the largest parts to the smallest and keep checking against the light whether a gap has been left anywhere.
• Spray the inner edge of the frame with the interior color first and only then with the top shade — anything that runs under will then not be visible.
• Cover the remaining areas of the fuselage and the wings with ordinary masking tape and paper; the set deals with parts of complicated shape, not with large areas.
