An injection-molded plastic kit of the Japanese Type 87 self-propelled anti-aircraft gun from the armament of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force, in 1:72 scale from the Japanese manufacturer Fujimi. It is a special edition from this manufacturer's military line. Fujimi has released this type in more than one version over a long period, so the kit also suits completing a collection of Japanese equipment already under way. Check on the packaging what exactly the special edition holds in addition to the base release.
The Type 87 is a self-propelled anti-aircraft system taken into service with the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force. On a tracked chassis derived from the domestic Type 74 tank it carries a traversing turret with a pair of quick-firing 35 mm cannons and with a set of radars for searching and tracking air targets. The combination of its own radar and a fire control system lets the vehicle act independently and escort armored units on the move - and that is exactly what sets it apart from the older towed anti-aircraft weapons. A characteristic feature is the silhouette of the turret with two radar antennas, one above the front and one at the rear, which fold down for travel. The vehicle is intended for the defense of its own units against low-flying targets.
It is best to separate the parts with nippers and to dress the sprue nubs with a file. Gluing is handled best with a thin cement for plastic. Finish and paint the running gear and the tracks before the hull is closed up. The thin radar antennas are the most vulnerable part of the model - it is sensible to glue them right at the very end, after the paint and after the weathering, and to leave them on the sprue until then. The cannon barrels deserve careful leveling of the parting line, because on cylindrical shapes it shows most. Apply a primer before painting and use an airbrush on the large areas. Gloss varnish under the decals helps, and a final matte varnish unifies the surface. Build the weathering up in stages: a dark wash into the engraved lines, then dust and mud pigments on the running gear.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
