About product

MASTER 1:72 MiG-21SM/M/MF (Fishbed J) - Turned Pitot Tube

A turned metal accessory in 1:72 scale from the Polish brand MASTER. It replaces the plastic Pitot tube, the long aerodynamic probe on the nose of the MiG-21 in the SM, M, and MF versions, which carry the NATO reporting name Fishbed J. This is not a kit — it is a single, but very visible, part that lifts the overall impression of the finished model.

Why Metal Instead of Plastic

The Pitot tube is the thinnest and most exposed part on the whole aircraft. In injection-molded plastic, it cannot be made slim enough to match scale, and it also tends to come out of the mold slightly bent. Turned metal holds a precise diameter along its full length, is perfectly straight and true, the tip can be genuinely sharp, and the point survives normal handling of the model without snapping off at the first touch. The difference shows even from a distance, since the eye immediately notices a thin, straight line on the nose.

Installation and painting tips

Cut off the plastic probe as close to the fuselage as possible and sand the remainder flat. Drill a hole into the nose matching the shank's diameter — use a hand drill, slowly and dry, so the plastic doesn't melt. Dry-fit the metal part and check that the probe sits on the fuselage's axis before fixing it with a drop of cyanoacrylate or epoxy. Before painting, degrease the metal with alcohol and apply a primer designed for metal, or the paint won't hold on the smooth surface. We recommend fitting the probe only at the very end of the build, after polishing and weathering, so it doesn't get in the way during handling.

Who the Accessory Is For

  • builders of MiG-21 models in the SM, M, and MF versions in 1:72 scale
  • modelers whose plastic probe has broken off or is bent
  • anyone who wants a quick upgrade with an immediately visible effect
  • beginners — the work is simple, just a hand drill and cyanoacrylate

The accessory is supplied unpainted. The kit, glue, and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

An aerodynamic probe on the aircraft's nose that senses air pressure to measure speed. On a model, it is the thinnest and most prominent protruding part.

No, it is a replacement metal part for an existing MiG-21 kit. The model itself is not included in the package.

A hole is drilled into the nose matching the shank's diameter, and the part is fixed with a drop of cyanoacrylate or epoxy. Plastic cement does not work on metal.

Yes. Degrease the metal with alcohol first and apply a primer for metal, or the paint won't hold on the smooth surface and will flake off.
