A single-sided Art Scale masking set for the MiG-29 9-19 SMT in 1:72 scale

This is not a model of the aircraft but a set of pre-cut self-adhesive masks for a model of the upgraded MiG-29 in the SMT version, production designation 9-19, in 1:72 scale. The one-sided designation means that masking is done from one side, that is from the outside; the double-sided version of the same set, which deals with the inner side of the glazing as well, is a separate item. The masks are self-adhesive and pre-cut to the parts of the GWH kit, so cutting with a scalpel falls away.

The real subject

The MiG-29SMT is an upgraded version of the well-known Soviet and Russian fighter. Its distinguishing mark is the enlarged dorsal spine, which took a further fuel load, and new avionics with more modern displays in the cockpit. Machines of this version serve with the Russian Air Force and differ from the original MiG-29s enough that with accessories it always pays to check whether a set matches the 9-19 version and not an earlier one.

Use

• Lift the mask off the backing with tweezers and set it on the part without sliding it.
• Press the edges down all the way round, so that paint does not bleed under them.
• Apply thin coats of paint; the edge then stays sharp.
• Take the mask off once the paint has flashed off, pulling at an angle.
• Which part each mask covers is shown by the instructions with the set.

For modelers in 1:72 scale, where the frames of glazing are so narrow that masking them by hand takes great patience. The single-sided version is enough for anyone who does not mask a cockpit from inside or deals with the interior another way.
