The Mk 24 Mine torpedo, nicknamed Fido, in 1:72 scale is a resin set from the manufacturer Brengun. It will add an American anti-submarine weapon of the Second World War to a model aircraft.
Responsibility details are not available.
A supplementary resin set, not an aircraft kit. It contains a casting of the American airborne anti-submarine weapon designated Mk 24 Mine and nicknamed Fido in 1:72 scale. Resin makes it possible to cast the slender body with no parting seam and to keep the fine details of the tail section, which would be lost in an injection mold. The set suits building naval patrol and anti-submarine aircraft of the Second World War, on which this armament tends to be left out of the base kit.
The designation Mk 24 Mine, that is literally a mine, was a deliberately chosen cover name. In reality it was an air-dropped torpedo with passive acoustic homing, which found its target by itself from the noise of a submarine's propellers. It was used in the closing stage of the Second World War in the Battle of the Atlantic from patrol and carrier-based aircraft. Among the crews the nickname Fido caught on. The true nature of the weapon remained secret for a long time, which is precisely why it was carried in the documents as a mine.
Wash the casting in lukewarm soapy water, cut the casting block off with a saw and sand the area wet with your airways protected. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). Apply a primer before painting. With underwing armament it pays to keep weathering discreet, as the weapon was hung on an aircraft shortly before take-off and tended to be in good condition. Try the fit dry first and check that the torpedo points exactly along the line of flight; a deviation shows immediately when seen from the front.
This is a supplementary set, not a complete kit. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
