An injection-molded plastic model of the American experimental fighter Northrop XP-61E in 1:72 scale from A&A Models. It is a new injection tooling capturing the prototype that was created by converting the P-61 Black Widow night fighter into a long-range escort fighter. The XP-61E received a one-piece bubble canopy for the new cockpit instead of the original remotely operated dorsal gun turret, and a different arrangement of the fuselage nacelle. The package contains clear parts and decals.
The Northrop P-61 Black Widow was the first purpose-built night fighter of the US Army Air Forces, a twin-boom machine with radar. The XP-61E prototype was derived from it as an attempt at a long-range daylight escort fighter: instead of the dorsal gun turret it received a glazed cockpit for two men under a long canopy and heavy gun armament in the nose. It never reached series production, but it served as the basis for the later reconnaissance version, the F-15 Reporter.
Glue the plastic with a liquid modeling cement and sand the joints carefully; with a modern short-run tooling, check the fit of the fuselage nacelle and the wing center section. Polish the large bubble canopy before gluing it in and edge it with masks. Apply a base (primer) before painting. Lay bare metal or dark camouflage down with an airbrush and bring out the fine panel lines with a paneliner.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
