Five wartime aces gave this plastic kit from the brand Italeri its name: P-51D Mustang Aces in 1:72 scale offers a decal sheet with the machines of the pilots George Preddy, John Meyer, John Voll, Richard Peterson and Leonard Carson. The manufacturer marks the difficulty with the second level, and the finished model measures fourteen centimeters.
The Mustang came about on a British order, but it became a real star only after the engine was exchanged for the supercharged Packard V-1650 derived from the Rolls-Royce type Merlin. The D version got a teardrop cockpit canopy with a view in all directions and six machine guns of 12.7 millimeter caliber in the wing. Thanks to drop tanks it escorted bombers as far as Berlin.
Most of the machines of the American aces flew in polished metal, so the result stands and falls with the preparation of the surface: the joints have to be filled and the area sanded smooth, otherwise a metallic coat will bring out every scratch. It pays to set the shades of the individual panels apart and to apply the personal markings onto a gloss intermediate layer, so that air bubbles do not form under the decals.
The plastic frets are unpainted, and ordinary cement for polystyrene will serve to finish the build.
