A plastic kit in 1:72 scale from the production of the UM brand. The subject is a project version of the German tank Panzer IV, on whose hull the narrow Schmalturm turret with a long gun of 7,5 cm caliber in the L/70 form was to be seated. The design never reached production, so it is a so-called paper project, a category which has its own firm place among modelers.
The Panzer IV was the basic German medium tank, which during the war was gradually rearmed with longer guns and had armor added. The Schmalturm turret arose as a later step of development for a heavier type: it had a narrower front, a smaller area exposed to hits and a better arranged mounting of the barrel. The design to join this turret with the hull of the Panzer IV and at the same time to keep the long L/70 gun was meant to unify the armament and to make use of the existing production base. It remained a study, as the combination never entered service. For a modeler it is a rewarding subject, because the silhouette of a well known tank takes on entirely different proportions.
Assemble and finish the running gear before you close the hull and fit the fenders. The long barrel is the most sensitive part of the whole model: seat it straight and check it from several angles, because even a small deviation is visible on the finished piece. Apply a primer before painting. Spray the base shade with an airbrush in thin layers; on project machines the choice of scheme is up to the modeler, so it pays to keep to a combination of shades credible for the period. Build the weathering sparingly: a dark wash into the detail, a dry brush on the edges and dust pigments on the running gear and the lower areas.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
