A diorama accessory of laser-cut wood in 1:72 scale from the Czech manufacturer Model Scene. It is not a model of an aircraft or a vehicle — it is a scenery element from which, once assembled and painted, you build a board fence bounding a plot, a yard or the service area of a building. The parts are cut from thin wood in a natural shade, so once painted they carry the real grain of the material and in a small scale read more faithfully than a plastic imitation.
What decides here is the width of the individual boards. Narrower boards mean a denser rhythm of vertical joints, which visually lengthens and refines the fence. In a scene it looks more carefully built and stands up better to a close view. The version with wider boards from the same range comes across as coarse and plain instead, like a fence put up from whatever timber came to hand. Choose the width of the boards according to the impression the surroundings of the model are meant to create.
Break the parts gently out of the sheet and sand them with fine abrasive paper so that the dark edges left by cutting disappear. PVA wood glue or thin cyanoacrylate suits the gluing. Paint by toning, not by covering — a wood stain, a glaze or heavily thinned acrylic paint preserve the texture. The dense rhythm of the joints comes out when you run a darker wash into them and go over the edges of the boards with a dry brush in a lighter shade. Use only as much water as necessary, otherwise the thin wood will ripple. Sink the posts into the terrain and darken their lower part slightly, as though they stood in damp soil.
The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted, as a laser-cut wooden part. The glue, the paints and any further material are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
