A plastic kit of the PzKpfw IV medium tank in the Ausf. F1 version in 1:72 scale. The maker is the Ukrainian brand UM, which specializes in the small scale and in the fine breakdown of parts. The F1 version is interesting for modelers in that it is still the original conception of the type with a short barrel, that is, an entirely different look from the one the later versions with the long gun have. The exact contents of the package, the number of parts and the marking schemes are given in the instructions enclosed with the kit.
The PzKpfw IV was originally conceived as a support tank whose short barrel of 7.5 cm caliber was to destroy fortified firing points and obstacles, while combat with armored targets remained with the types with a high muzzle velocity. The Ausf. F1 version represents the last and most widespread release of this original conception. Compared with the older versions it was given stronger frontal armor, which increased the weight, and in response to that also wider tracks and modified drive sprockets and idler wheels - that is precisely the most conspicuous difference you will notice on the model. When it turned out that the short barrel was not enough against the new opponents, the vehicles were rearmed with the long gun and the designation changed. The Ausf. F1 is thus exactly that transitional point where a support tank began to become the main tank.
The running gear gives the most work. Fit the wheels and the return rollers on a flat surface and watch that they all seat in the same plane; otherwise the model stands crooked once finished and it cannot be put right. The wide tracks of the F1 version are a characteristic feature, so do not mask them with a thick coat of paint. Rid the hull and the turret of seams before painting and sand them with fine paper. Apply the primer thinly and spray the base shade with an airbrush in several passes. With tanks of this period it pays to finish the decals on a gloss varnish first, then to matte the finish and only at the very end to do the washes, the chipping and the dust. Apply the dust pigments from the bottom upward and do not overdo their amount - in 1:72 scale very little is enough.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
