A decal sheet from the British brand Xtradecal in 1:72 scale focused on the special and retirement colorings of Panavia Tornado aircraft in the GR.4 and GR.4A versions. These finishes came about on the occasion of unit anniversaries and at the ending of the type in service, and they differ from ordinary camouflage schemes in their large-area color treatment. The particular machines are given by the manufacturer on the packaging of the sheet.
The Tornado is a European twin-engined combat aircraft with a variable-geometry wing, developed in cooperation between several countries. The British strike version GR.4 came about by modernizing older machines and was intended for attacks on ground targets, while the GR.4A version was equipped for reconnaissance tasks. Operation of this type with the Royal Air Force ended in 2019 and on that occasion some of the aircraft were given commemorative colorings.
Large-area decals are more demanding than ordinary markings, because they cover panel lines and transitions in shape. Work in parts, let the decal slide into place off the paper backing and check its alignment with the fuselage at once, because once it has dried you will not move it again. Let long stripes overhang beyond the edge of the area and cut the surplus off, once dry, with a fresh blade run along the edge, not with scissors. The order of work is essential: gloss varnish, decals, softener, drying, and only then the shading of lines, the weathering and the final matte or semi-gloss varnish. On real machines, special schemes tend to be fresh, so go sparingly with the patina.
