A plastic kit of the Vought RF-8G Crusader (photo-reconnaissance version, over Vietnam) in 1:72 scale from Sword. An unarmed reconnaissance aircraft with cameras instead of cannons.
Responsibility details are not available.
An injection-molded plastic kit of the photo-reconnaissance version of the American Vought F-8 Crusader carrier fighter — the RF-8G — in 1:72 scale from Sword. It is a short-run kit that adds cast resin parts for fine detail and painting masks to the plastic. The decal sheet covers machines from the war in Vietnam.
The RF-8G was the unarmed photo-reconnaissance version of the Crusader. Instead of cannons and rockets it carried a set of aerial cameras in the forward fuselage, so its pilot obtained images of enemy positions at the cost of being completely defenseless — the only protection was speed and low flight. That is exactly why the RF-8G became the indispensable eyes of the US Navy over Vietnam, where they flew dangerous reconnaissance missions from the decks of aircraft carriers. The Crusader was the last American fighter designed with cannons as its main armament, but the RF-8G had no weapons at all.
With a short-run kit expect more careful cleaning up of the parts and dry-fitting — the joints are not self-centering as they are with the large manufacturers. Wash the resin parts free of mold release agent, cut off the casting blocks and glue them with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). Spray the typical naval finish (gray upper surfaces, white below) with an airbrush over primer. Outline the camera windows and the glazing using the masks enclosed.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
