Carefully break the parts out of the fret and bend them along the engraved lines - a photo-etch bender or two blades will help. Bond them with super glue (cyanoacrylate), or solder them. Apply a primer suitable for metal before painting, otherwise the paint will not hold well on smooth brass. The metal basket comes into its own in metallic shades with a dark wash; light rust and grime from pigments give the cart a worn look.
