About product

Peewit 1:72 masking set — Sikorsky HSS-1 Seabat

This item is NOT a model of a helicopter but an accessory for the build. It is a set of precisely die-cut self-adhesive masks in 1:72 scale for a model of the Sikorsky HSS-1 Seabat anti-submarine helicopter. The templates follow the framing of the extensive glazing of the pilot's cabin and of the side windows of the cargo compartment, and they are as a rule supplemented by masks for the tires. On a helicopter where the glazing makes up a substantial part of the forward fuselage, such a set is exceptionally useful — cutting it by hand would mean dozens of tiny frames. Peewit is a Czech brand specializing in masking templates for aircraft models.

The real subject

The Sikorsky HSS-1 Seabat was the naval anti-submarine version of the well-known S-58 helicopter family, with a piston radial engine housed in the nose and a shaft running diagonally upward to the main rotor. It entered service in the mid-1950s and was used in pairs — one machine searched with a dipping sonar while the other carried the armament and attacked. A later version received equipment for flying at night and in poor weather. As part of the unification of American equipment designations the type was redesignated into the SH series in the early 1960s. The characteristic tall nose with large windows, the folding tail boom and the four-blade main rotor are among the most distinctive features of the whole family.

Use

  • lift the piece of mask out with tweezers or the tip of a scalpel
  • stick it on a dry and degreased clear part and press the edges down carefully
  • on large window areas work one frame at a time and do not hurry
  • spray several thin coats and let them flash off in between
  • lift the mask off as soon as possible after it has dried, pulling back at an angle

Who the set is for

For modelers of naval helicopters and for everyone who wants sharp, even frames on extensive glazing in a small scale. The set shortens the most tedious part of the build fundamentally and protects the clear parts from being scratched with a knife.

The set holds masking templates only. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package. The masks are cut to fit a particular kit, and on a model of another origin the shape of the frames may differ.

FAQ

It is not. These are solely a set of masking templates; the kit in 1:72 scale itself has to be obtained separately.

The forward part of the fuselage is made up of extensive, complex glazing with a large number of tiny frames. Cutting tape by hand would take a lot of time and risk scratching the clear part.

The HSS-1 Seabat was the naval anti-submarine version with sonar equipment. Alongside it there were transport and rescue variants for the other branches of the armed forces.

It is not recommended. The tack drops after the first removal and a tiny frame stretches easily, so it would no longer fit exactly.
