A short-run plastic kit from the Czech maker RS Models. The set covers the two-seat trainer that came about during the Second World War as the Arado Ar 396 and after the war continued to be built in France under the designation SIPA S.10. The model is intended to be assembled and painted, and its short-run execution assumes a more experienced builder.
The Ar 396 was an advanced and transition trainer of largely wooden construction, with a two-seat cockpit with tandem seating and an air-cooled engine. Its production was placed with French works during the war, and after the liberation these went on building the aircraft for their own needs under the designation SIPA S.10. A whole development series of further versions grew out of this type, in which the wooden parts were gradually replaced by metal construction. Machines of this family served as trainers and liaison aircraft well into the 1950s, so they have an interesting reach across both wartime and postwar subject matter.
Short-run kits are built differently from the sets of the large brands. The parts have no locating pins, holes for the landing gear or the armament often have to be drilled yourself, and the leading and trailing edges are best thinned by sanding. Always dry-fit the parts and glue in small steps. The canopy glazing on short-run kits tends to be thicker; it helps to polish it with a sanding sponge and polishing compound and then mask it carefully. Trainers as a rule carried striking, highly visible finishes, so the model offers a more colorful treatment than ordinary combat hardware.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
