This is a kit of one of the heaviest artillery pieces of its day, rendered in the small 1:72 scale. The model is meant to be glued and painted. The material of the parts and the make-up of the package are given in the enclosed instructions, so check the contents against them before building.
Siege howitzers of 30.5 cm caliber were built by the Skoda works in Pilsen and the Austro-Hungarian army used them in the First World War against fortified targets. The weapon was built around a short, very heavy barrel with a steep trajectory, so that the shell came down on the target from above — that is where the roof of a fortification is weakest. Because of the weight, the outfit traveled broken down into several separate loads and was put together again at the firing position. Under the barrel there is a conspicuously robust carriage with a base that carried the recoil into the ground.
Put the parts together dry first and check how the carriage sits on the base — with artillery, every deviation shows in the angle of the barrel. Choose the glue according to the material of the parts: thin extra-fine cement for injection-molded plastic, super glue for resin or metal. The model has few large surfaces, so a primer earns its place, as it unifies the surface and reveals fine score marks. Spray the base shade thinned with an airbrush, in several thin coats. Then bring the barrel and the mechanisms alive with a dark wash in the recesses and a light dry brush on the edges. A small base with earth and rails for bringing up ammunition suits a model of this kind too.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
