A small accessory for figures in 1:72 scale. It is not a kit and in the package you will not get a whole figure — it is a casting of a helmet for fitting onto a figure you already have. For a Soviet scene it is the simplest way to get the right silhouette of a head where a production set offers different headgear.
The designation SSh-39/40 joins two closely related patterns of the Soviet steel helmet. On both the dome has practically the same shape: a rounded top, a slightly drawn-out ridge and a short edge running all the way around with no pronounced peak. The main difference between the patterns is inside, in the way the inner fitting is attached, so from the outside you will tell them apart only with difficulty — which is why they are commonly listed under one designation among modeling accessories. For a model that is practical: a single casting covers both variants, and in 1:72 scale the outline carries the main information anyway. The army and the equipment match here: the SSh is the Soviet type of helmet.
Separate the casting from the casting residue with a sharp scalpel or a fine saw and level the cut surface with fine sandpaper. Cut the figure's original head off low at the neck, seat the new one dry and check the angle. Glue with super glue and even the seam out with a modeling compound. Degrease the parts before painting, apply a thin primer and paint the helmet in a matte color. You will draw the rounded dome out with a single lightening from above and a dark shadow under the edge around the circumference; suggest any scuffs on the edge by dots of a dark metallic shade, not by a continuous line.
This is an accessory for figures, not a model on its own. The set is supplied unpainted; figures, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
