About product

A resin engine for the Spitfire Mk. IX in 1:72 scale

This set from the Czech maker Eduard brings a finely cast resin replacement engine for a model of the Spitfire Mk. IX in 1:72 scale. It is not an aircraft model: it is an accessory for a kit under construction, which comes into its own above all when you want to leave the nose cowling open or to build the model in a workshop scene with the engine exposed. In 1:72 scale it is delicate work, but the sharpness of the casting against a simplified plastic part makes all the more difference.

The real subject

The Spitfire Mk. IX came about as a quick answer to the appearance of more powerful opponents: a Rolls-Royce Merlin V12 with a two-stage two-speed supercharger was installed in the airframe of the previous version. It was that engine which gave the aircraft markedly better performance at high altitude. The engine was liquid-cooled, set in a narrow nose and backed up by the characteristic radiators under the wing; the Mk. IX version became one of the most numerously built variants of the whole Spitfire line.

Building and painting tips

First wash the resin castings in warm water with dish soap, because of the mold release residue. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw, not with sprue cutters, and sand with respiratory protection. It is glued exclusively with super glue, as cement for plastic does not dissolve resin. Dry fit everything before gluing; in 1:72 scale a tenth of a millimeter too much is enough for the cowling not to close. Spray the engine with a dark base, bring out the metal parts with a dry brush and pick out the pipework in a contrasting shade; a fine wash into the recesses will pull out the texture of the block.

Who the set is for

  • For modelers building the Spitfire Mk. IX in 1:72 scale
  • For builders who want a model with an open nose or a workshop scene
  • For more experienced modelers used to small resin parts
  • For anyone interested in British fighters

The set is an accessory for a kit. It does not hold an aircraft model, paints or glue.

FAQ

It is not. It is an add-on set with an engine, which you put into a kit in 1:72 scale that you already have.

Then the detail will not show. The set makes sense on models with an open nose or in a workshop scene.

Super glue based on cyanoacrylate. Ordinary cement for plastic does not hold on resin.

Accessories of this kind tend to be designed for a particular kit. Before buying, check that it matches the model you are building.
