About product

Hauler 1:72 SpPz 2 Luchs, a photo-etched detail set

A photo-etched set from the Czech maker Hauler for a kit of the reconnaissance armored vehicle Spähpanzer 2 Luchs in 1:72 scale. The set is cut for a particular kit, the Revell one, so the outlines of the parts match the plastic and nothing has to be measured again. It is not a model of the vehicle but a set of thin metal parts for working it up.

What the photo-etched parts add

A reconnaissance vehicle is typically a vehicle with smooth surfaces on which only the small elements stand out: the light guards, grab handles, brackets, smoke grenade launchers and the grilles over the power unit. In 1:72 scale injection-molded plastic necessarily makes them thicker than reality, and a merged grille is at a distance only a suggested surface. Photo-etched metal, by contrast, has a thickness matching sheet metal, holds a sharp edge and can genuinely be seen through. On a large smooth vehicle these are exactly the elements that make the difference.

The real subject

The Spähpanzer 2 Luchs was a German amphibious reconnaissance vehicle with drive to all eight wheels, introduced in the mid-1970s. Characteristic features were steering on all axles and a second driver's station in the rear, thanks to which the vehicle could withdraw just as quickly as it advanced, a crucial quality for reconnaissance. The armament consisted of an autocannon in a rotating turret. It remained in service until the end of the first decade of this century.

Building and painting tips

Before you start gluing metal, make sure the plastic beneath it is finished and smooth, as sanding next to an already fitted photo-etched part is unpleasant. Make the bends in the etched grooves and with a slight overbend, as the material always springs back a little. Dose the cyanoacrylate with a pin in minute drops. Degrease the metal with alcohol and spray on a primer. Postwar German hardware is often painted in a three-tone camouflage with hard edges; those are done either with a template of modeling putty or with an airbrush at very low pressure close to the surface.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of postwar German hardware in 1:72 scale.
  • Collectors of wheeled reconnaissance vehicles of the Cold War.
  • Modelers who already have experience of gluing and bending photo-etched parts.

This is an accessory to a plastic kit, not a standalone model. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. It is a separate photo-etched set for working up a plastic kit, which has to be obtained separately.

Once the plastic beneath them is finished, cleaned up and sanded. Sanding next to an already glued metal part is difficult and easily damages it.

Either with a template of modeling putty laid tight against the surface, or with an airbrush at low pressure run close to the model.

Metal is springy and after bending it partly returns. A slight overbend is a common technique to make the part seat at the required angle.
