About product

A Soviet fast tank with rocket armament in 1:72 scale from UM

A plastic kit of the Soviet fast tank of the BT series in the form completed with a launcher for unguided RS-132 rockets. The scale is 1:72 and the maker is UM. The kit comes from short-run production, so it expects the modeler to try the parts dry and to level the mating surfaces. The number of parts and the range of markings are stated on the box and in the manufacturer's instructions.

The real subject

The fast tanks of the BT series were among the quickest fighting vehicles in the world in the 1930s. They owed that to a chassis derived from the American Christie design, with large road wheels and the convertible option of running on wheels or on tracks. The BT-7 was the later and most widespread member of the family and carried a 45 mm gun in its turret. Soviet designers tried a range of superstructures, including launchers for RS-132 rockets, that is unguided missiles of 132 mm caliber, so that the machine could act against area targets.

Building and painting tips

Assemble and complete the running gear before you close the hull; on this series it is precisely the running gear that is most on show. Try the parts dry and run the holes for the pins through with a drill as needed. Paint the launcher separately and fit it only once the turret is finished. Soviet green looks best when you shade it and leave the horizontal surfaces lighter; rub the edges through and let a dark wash into the recesses. Dust and mud on the running gear are right at home on this equipment.

Who the model is for

  • Those interested in Soviet interwar equipment
  • Collectors of the fast tanks of the BT series
  • Modelers with experience of short-run plastic
  • Lovers of unusual and experimental forms

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is a Soviet unguided rocket of 132 mm caliber, used from airborne and from ground launchers. On a tank it served to act against area targets.

Soviet designers tried a range of superstructures on the fast tanks of the BT series, and the rocket form was among them. How many machines came into being this way and how they proved themselves in the field remains a subject for the specialist literature.

A chassis derived from the Christie design, with large road wheels, which made it possible to run on wheels or on tracks. The BT tanks were exceptionally fast for their day.

Rather not. Short-run plastic calls for trying the parts dry and for adjusting the mating surfaces. With basic practice, though, the build gives no trouble.
