1:72 Tree fantasy base

A tree base in 1:72 from the fantasy range

A natural subject with a tree is one of the most versatile kinds of ground there is. This piece falls within the maker's fantasy range and carries a tree motif in 1:72 scale. A figure or a small model on it gains an immediately readable setting, and with it a vertical line that lifts the whole composition upward.

Use in a display case

The tree works as the frame of the setting, so it pays to place the figure at its foot rather than directly in front of it. The trunk will also serve as a support for the figure to lean against. In an arrangement of several bases side by side the tree makes a high accent that brings movement to the shelf. If the figure has a strongly painted face, it is sensible to turn it so that the crown does not shade it and steal the attention.

Painting bark and greenery

• build the trunk from a dark base and lighten the edges gradually
• let a brown wash run into the grooves of the bark
• mix the greenery from at least three shades, otherwise it reads as artificial
• link the roots to the ground with dust pigment
• add the foliage in small amounts and step back as you go

For what figures

For figure painters and builders of small settings who are looking for natural ground with height. It also serves well as a free-standing display piece under one chosen figure whose painting, rather than the surrounding buildings, is meant to stand out. A natural subject is moreover tied to no period, so the same ground will carry a historical figure and an entirely invented one alike.
